Windows 10 marks the biggest departure from the "traditional" Windows looks so far. It features flatter graphics, a minimalist design and redesigned system menus.
Only a few traces of the classic Windows theme remain. The control panel and some system tools are the most prominent examples. Of course, it won't take long for Microsoft to complete the overhaul.
But the new design is not to everyone's taste. Sure, you can apply themes and skins that make Windows look more like yesterday's releases, but what about the icons themselves??

How to use icon packs
Some icon packs come with their own installers and installation instructions, some require third-party tools like Icon Packager or 7Conifier, others just contain a set of DLL, EXE or ICO files that you can save on your system.
Once you have the icons installed, you sometimes have to change them manually. To do this, right click in a folder or file and select the Customize tab.
Next, navigate to folder icons> Change icon and use browse Click on the button where you saved the icon.
Once you have selected it, never move or delete the ICO file. Otherwise, the icon of all files that use it will be reset to the Windows default white rectangle.
1. WinRemix Icon Pack
The WinRemix Icon Pack is a fork of Daniel Ruiz' Super Flat Remix. Folders are only available in a medium green, but look fantastic. In each folder there is an icon that allows you to set them to content. There is also an empty option.
Aside from folders, there is a selection of icon files that seem to take inspiration from the Fluent Design principles used in Windows and the Material Design used in Android.
The installation is a bit more complicated than some other packs.
In the downloaded file you must first locate and run Reg Key. Now continue Windows \ System32, take over the admin ownership of imageres.dll, and rename it to imageres.dll.original. Then do the same with zipfldr.dll. It protects your files in case you want to revert to the originals in the future.
Next, add the imageres.dll and zipfldr.dll from your download into the Windows \ System32 folder. Rename icons update to update icons.exe and run the software.
2. OS X Minimalism Icon Pack
Yes, you read that right. This icon pack brings the much acclaimed macOS icons to Windows. They're not quite the real deal (the developer edited them a bit), but they're as close as you're going to get.
In addition to the default system-wide icons, the OS X Minimalism iPack also patches the icons for Chrome, Firefox, RegEdit, the Calculator, the Command Prompt, and Windows Media Player.
OS X Minimalism iPack is available as 7Z file. You need a program like 7-Zip to access it. 3. The Numix icon project
If you have used a Linux or Android based operating system, you may already be familiar with the Numix project. It does everything from themes and icons to apps and wallpapers.
This icon pack available on DeviantArt is the Windows port of his work. It includes blue, brown and pink folder icons, as well as a variety of ICO files that you can deploy elsewhere in Windows.
Like the OS X Minimalism iPack, it also contains an iPack EXE file that supports the installation process.
4. Arc icons
Arc icons are a port of a popular Linux icon pack. They are created by the same developer who is responsible for the Numix icon port.
The blue tint you see everywhere in Windows 10 is strong. As with other packs on this list, the symbols take only a shallow and minimal approach. In addition to folder icons, you'll find a Wi-Fi icon, a "translation" icon, a new recycle bin icon, and a wide range of general multipurpose icons.
These icons are incredibly easy to install. Just download the ZIP file from DeviantArt and extract it. In the unzipped folder you will find all the individual ICO files. Just copy and paste them into the folder where you keep other ICO files, and they are available in File Properties> Customize> Folder Icons> Change Icon.
5. Alienware Eclipse
Boring instead of "modern" icons? Why not try something radical and check out the Alienware Eclipse package? If you are a gamer with a lot of flashy peripherals, they will look spectacular on your screen.
As you can see from the image below, the designer combines electric blue and black to create an amazingly futuristic set of icons.
All the usual icons are present, including music, document, image and video folders, the recycle bin, a game icon and even a replacement icon for DLL files.
Warning: these icons were originally designed for Windows 8.1 developed. They work on Windows 10, but occasionally you'll find missing icons or other unexpected glitches.

7. Flat Color W10 IconPack
I will leave you with the Flat Color W10 IconPack. As with the other packages I mentioned earlier, it takes its cues from Windows 10's Fluent Design, but smooths out the colors and homogenizes the design.
For folders, the designer has used the same basic design, with a content-specific icon layered on top of it. There are also unique icons for music, video and image files.
Like the Anime and Arc packages, icons come in a basic ICO format. All you have to do is make the changes you want in each file or folder Customization tab.
